The ritual, which began at noon, lasted 40 minutes and was launched from Point Jerningham’s saluting batteries.

The Duke of Edinburgh died late Friday night (NZT) at the age of 99.

The Duke retained the positions of Admiral of the Fleet of the Royal New Zealand Navy, Field Marshal of the New Zealand Army, and Marshal of the Royal New Zealand Air Force in the New Zealand Defence Force.

Although the standard number of gun salutes is 21, the NZDF stated that when fired from a royal park or setting, an additional 20 rounds are added.
