Epic is celebrating Sonic's 30th anniversary with a free copy of Sonic Mania

From now until July 1, you can get a free copy of Sonic Mania from the Epic Games Store. Even at its original asking price of $19.99, the game seemed like a good buy. It’s a no-brainer as a freebie, especially if you loved the fast-paced gameplay of the previous instalments.

The platformer was released in the summer of 2017 as an homage to the original Sonic games for the Sega Genesis. It has traditional gameplay and pixel-perfect 2D visuals that operate at a buttery smooth 60 frames per second.

Throughout the 1990s, Sonic proved to be a thorn in the side of Nintendo and its mascot Mario, wowing players with fast-paced gameplay that is still amazing 30 years later (the soundtracks weren’t bad, too). The popularity of the original game prompted a sequel, then another, and so on. Sonic eventually become one of the most well-known franchises in gaming history.

Sega announced a new compilation in May as part of their continuing Sonic the Hedgehog 30th anniversary celebration, which would feature Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic CD, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and Sonic & Knuckles. Sonic Origins, as the game is dubbed, is set to release later this year on a variety of platforms.

As for Sonic Mania, you have until July 1 at 10 a.m. to secure your free copy from the Epic Games Store.
