‘Moulin Rouge’ takes home the Tony Award for Best Musical or Comedy.

The big winners at Sunday’s Tony Awards ceremony in New York were Moulin Rouge, A Christmas Carol, and The Inheritance.

Moulin Rouge was named Best Musical, and its stars Aaron Tveit and Danny Burstein were named Best Actor and Best Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical, respectively.

Best Direction of a Musical, Best Sound Design of a Musical, Best Lighting Design of a Musical, Best Scenic Design of a Musical, Best Orchestrations, Best Choreography, and Best Costume Design of a Musical were also awarded to the show.

A Christmas Carol earned the prizes for Best Sound Design of a Play, Best Original Score, Best Lighting Design of a Play, Best Scenic Design of a Play and Best Costume Design of a Play.

Adrienne Warren was presented with the Best Lead Actress in a Musical trophy for her role in Tina.

Lauren Patten won the Tony for Best Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical for Jagged Little Pill. Its author, Diablo Cody, won for Best Book of a Musical.

Andrew Burnap and Lois Smith won for Best Lead Actor and Best Actress in a Featured Role in a Play for The Inheritance. Stephen Daldry picked up the Tony for Best Direction of a Play for helming the production, which also was deemed Best Play.

David Alan Grier earned the Best Actor in a Featured Role in a Play for his work in A Soldier’s Play and the show was voted Best Revival.

Mary-Louise Parker was named Best Lead Actress in a Play for The Sound Inside.

Audra McDonald and Leslie Odom Jr. hosted the live event at the Winter Garden Theatre. The gala aired on CBS and streamed on Paramount+.

Jagged Little Pill went into the competition with a leading 15 nominations, followed by Moulin Rouge with 14, Slave Play with 12, Tina with 12, The Inheritance with 11, A Soldier’s Play with seven, The Sound Inside with six and A Christmas Carol with five.

Most of Broadway’s plays and musicals reopened this month after being closed since March 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic. Sunday’s Tony Awards recognized excellence for the 2019-20 theater season.
