According to the school, Iowa men’s basketball guard Jordan Bohannon is recovering from a severe head injury after being “physically assaulted” early Sunday morning.
“Thankfully Jordan is recovering well after being attacked by an individual he did not see coming at him,” Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery said in a news release Monday. “We were made aware of the incident immediately.
“We are grateful that friends who were with Jordan at the time kept the incident from escalating. His health is our number one concern.”
The suspected attack happened in Iowa City and was widely publicised on social media on Monday. The video shows Bohannon talking to someone at a bar before another guy unexpectedly punched him, knocking him to the ground.
The video concludes with a group of spectators rushing towards Bohannon and restraining the other man as Bohannon tries to get to his feet.
Iowa officials told ESPN that a police investigation currently is ongoing, but no charges have been filed over the incident.
Bohannon, the brother of former Wisconsin star Jason Bohannon, has the most 3-pointers taken in Iowa history (364). Last season, he averaged 10.6 points, 4.4 assists, and 3.1 rebounds in 31 games for the Hawkeyes.
Jordan Bohannon previously stated his intention to return to Iowa for a sixth season.
