Historic Christchurch Swimming Club is fighting for its survival.

A Christchurch swimming club with a long and distinguished history is challenging the Christchurch City Council’s decision to close it down.

Wharenui Pool, which is 111 years old, has produced a slew of Olympic and Commonwealth Games medalists.

However, with the upcoming opening of the Metrosports Centre, it has been determined that it is no longer needed.

Club president Chris Averill said that continued repair expenses were to blame, but the council refused to specify what they were.

He argued that the pool could be run for even less than the council’s claimed $700,000 a year.

A council spokesperson said Wharenui’s ongoing cost could no longer be justified, and there would soon be four council pools in the area.
