Freezing temperatures have struck most of the country, and trains in Wellington have been stopped.

Due to icy conditions, train services in and out of Wellington on the Kapiti line were halted.

Metlink stated that numerous trains were waiting to depart Waikanae for Wellington but were unable to do so due to the ice conditions and will do so as soon as feasible.

There are a few bus substitutes available, however Metlink has said that they will not be operating on time.

It encouraged passengers to plan alternate transportation.

Temperatures dropped in the region overnight with Paraparaumu recording -1C at 7am.

Most of the country was at or near freezing and MetService urged drivers to watch out for ice.

St Arnaud was the the coldest spot on -7.8C.

Christchurch, where temperatures plunged to -4C this morning, drivers are being urged to take care.

Christchurch City Council said there was ice on roads that would not normally be affected.
