Covid cancels ASB Tennis Classic

January’s ASB Tennis Classic in Auckland has been cancelled due to complications running the event amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Tournament director Karl Budge said plans were well underway for the tournament but with too much uncertainty amid the Covid-19 environment its been cancelled.

Last month Budge told RNZ they had contemplated a number of options for the tournament including different dates and

“We’re ultimately trying to be as open-minded as we can. The moment we get too locked into a plan and close our minds off, we’re only going to hurt ourselves.

“There’s no locked-in dates, as yet. As it stands we will still operate the first two weeks of the calendar but we’re certainly not closing our minds to anything outside of that as well.”

Budget had hoped the government decision to relax quarantine restrictions for the Australian rugby side would would help his situation.

“That three-day quarantine period, then enabling players to get out and do some training certainly helps. There’s some glimmer of hope for us in that space.”

However that hope has now evaporated and the tournament has been called off.
