Improvements to one of the major routes to and from Auckland Airport could result in shorter travel times for passengers.

State Highway 20B has been upgraded, with new lanes added in each direction for buses and cars holding three or more passengers, according to Waka Kotahi.

There is also a shared path for those who choose to walk or cycle to the airport, work, school, or stores.

Those that take the train to Puhinui Station will be able to transfer to the Airport Connection electric bus, which will take them to the airport in around 10 minutes.

Every day, over 30,000 vehicles use the lane, and the upgrade project cost $72 million.
