At Toko Road near Onemana, the blaze swept over the highway.

Motorists are being asked to avoid the area, delay travel, or use a detour on State Highway 25A, State Highway 26 and State Highway 2.

Coromandel District Council mayor Sandra Goudie said local rural fire fighters and two helicopters had bought the blaze under control.

Goudie understood the fire originated from a hedge on the side of the ride, but the cause was unknown.

She was not aware of any dwellings being at risk and said hot spots were being dampened down

“My biggest concern would be the wind fanning the flame and going towards any other forested or semi forested blocks. It’s still pretty dry.”

There were strong winds, and the area had not had much rainfall over winter, Goudie said.

New Zealand Transport Agency Waikato system manager Cara Lauder said the road was likely to remain closed for the next few hours at least.

The Journey Planner website would offer up to date information on the road closure, detour route, traffic, and other key information.

“Please stay safe, avoid the area and follow the instructions of any emergency personnel and traffic management staff at the cordons,” Lauder said.

She said people should visit the Journey Planner website for up to date information on the road closure, detour route, traffic and other key information.
