According to the health ministry, 39,637 new instances of the novel coronavirus COVID-19 have been recorded in Brazil in the last 24 hours, with 873 fatalities from the virus.

The figures reflect a weekend decrease in reported cases and deaths. Brazil reports more than 1,800 fatalities each day on a rolling seven-day average.

According to ministry data, the South American country has now documented 16,947,062 cases since the epidemic began, with the official death toll rising to 473,404 in the world’s third biggest epidemic outside of the United States and India, and its second-deadliest.
