The driver of a car that drove into a canal near Methven early this morning is still being sought by the police dive team.
The corpse of the passenger was discovered in the car that crashed into the Rangitata Diversion Race at Methven, according to Aoraki Area Commander Inspector Dave Gaskin.
Shortly after 1 a.m., emergency authorities got a report of a car that had crashed into the canal off Pudding Hill Road.
Earlier today, Search and Rescue personnel rescued the vehicle from the sea.
According to police, a formal identification procedure to identify the deceased has commenced.
The investigation into the circumstances of the collision is still underway.
