A $20 scratch-off lottery ticket was given to a North Carolina woman as a gift from a family friend, and she was startled to learn it was a $2 million jackpot winner.
Karen Urtecho Sandrez of Charlotte told North Carolina Education Lottery officials she received the 100X The Cash scratch-off ticket as a gift from a family friend who had purchased the ticket from Lucia Food Mart in Stanley.
When Urtecho Sandrez scratched off the $2 million prise, she said she was taken aback.
“Honestly, I couldn’t believe it,” the winner said. “You don’t believe it when you read it.”
Urtecho Sandrez went to the lottery offices and decided to take her winnings in the form of a $1.2 million lump sum payment. She admitted that it was still difficult for her to comprehend the victory.
“It’s kind of surreal,” she said.
