When a Virginia angler caught a 3-pound, 9-ounce goldfish in a creek, he set a new state record.

According to the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources, Jeremy Fortner grabbed the 16-inch-long goldfish while fishing in Hunting Creek, a branch of the Potomac River.

The fish, which is over 15 inches in circumference, was officially weighed at Green Top Sporting Goods in Ashland and came in at 3 pounds, 9 ounces, breaking the state record.

According to the agency, Fortner’s goldfish is the first to be recognised since the species was added to the state record programme in 2020.
