According to police, a man who was brought to hospital after being placed in a restraint chair in the Manukau Custody Unit on Monday has died.
After being found at a tara home on Monday afternoon, the man in his twenties was transferred to the custody unit for violating his electronically monitored bail.
He had exhibited unusual behaviour following his detention and while in custody, including attempting to hurt himself in his cell, according to authorities.
According to police, he was placed in a restraint chair for his own protection while in jail.
After his health worsened, the man was transferred to Middlemore Hospital.
The man died yesterday, according to police.
His next of kin have been notified, and a variety of investigations into the incident are ongoing, according to police.
