The 19-year-old whose name is suppressed was arrested almost two years ago after planning to ram his car into a group of people and then stab them.

He said he was radicalised online and was planning to carry out the attack for Allah.

He had been in prison for almost two months after being convicted of additional charges of absconding from the residential care facility he was sentenced to for the earlier charges.

He appeared in the Christchurch District Court this morning where his sentencing was adjourned for a month while he got one-on-one help from a psychologist.

Before he was remanded back into custody he updated Judge Stephen O'Driscoll on his progress, telling him that while he had been in prison he had passed his learner driver licence test and had been sitting NCEA credits in literacy and numeracy.
