Safety Report: Outdated software systems puts U.S. Coast Guard at risk

Concern is surfacing about the U.S. Coast Guard’s use of outdated software systems, following a newly released safety report. Numerous vessels have been targeted by cyber adversaries since May. The Department of Homeland Security has also received reports of malicious software activity designed to disrupt the systems.

These concerns have become an even bigger priority since crew members reported an attack during an international trip in February. An analysis concluded the system was impacted, but the control functions were not.

As a result, experts have recommended the three main solutions: bolstering security with segmented networks, creating network logins for every crew member instead of one general credential, and patching vulnerabilities by installing anti-virus software.

These protective measures come nearly a month after Iran said the U.S. military lives in a “Hollywood movie.”

“The Americans’ ability in the cyber sphere is like their military capabilities — it is often exaggerated beyond the reality,” stated Ali Shamkhani, secretary for the Supreme National Council of Iran.

Officials say maintaining effective cyber security is not just an IT issue, but a “fundamental operational imperative in the 21st Century maritime environment.”
