Gas explosion in Durham, N.C. leaves 1 person dead


One person is dead and several more are injured after a gas explosion and partial building collapse in North Carolina. The blast happened in downtown Durham when a contractor digging under the sidewalk hit a gas line.

Fifteen people, including a firefighter, were transported to area hospitals.

Thick black smoke could be seen from above as flames pushed through the buildings windows.

Witnesses say the force of the explosion could be felt two blocks away, where the windows of a restaurant were blown out.

According to reporting by the Associated Press, the building is occupied by a construction engineering company.
