Anzac Day services in Waitaki District to go ahead

But Gary Kircher said the council is working with the police to provide a heightened level of security.

The Royal New Zealand Returned and Services' Association approached the police shortly after the Christchurch mosque attacks for advice on the national commemorations.

Police have asked for some Anzac Day services around the country to be scaled back, consolidated or postponed until next year.

Mr Kircher said some of the measures being taken will be more visible than others.

He said reasonable caution is required as people pay their respects to those who gave their lives for our freedom.

Elsewhere, security concerns prompted Queenstown's Anzac Day dawn parade to be cancelled, although the dawn service will still go ahead there and two-thirds of Auckland's Anzac Day commemorative events will not happen this year.

However, RSA representatives from Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin say at this stage services will be running as usual.
