Innoson Group has vowed to takeover Nigeria’s financial institution, GTBank.

Cornel Osigwe, Head of Corporate Communications, said this in a statement, while reacting to GTBank response

He said: “GTB in a press statement signed by Erhi Obebeduo, claimed that “the judgment allegedly in issue is in respect of Garnishee Proceedings against the account of the Nigerian Customs Service Board domiciled with the Bank and not against the Bank as an entity”. GTB by this claim is nothing short of being economical with the truth.

“The Garnishee order absolute issued by the Federal High Court Ibadan in Suit No: FHC/L/CS/603/2006 ordered GTB to pay Innoson Nigeria Ltd the judgment sum of N2.4 Billion with a 22% interest, per annum, on the judgment sum until the final liquidation of the judgment.

“GTB appealed the Federal High Court’s decision up to the Supreme Court and lost. From the Supreme Court’s decision, you will find that the case was between GTB and Innoson Nigeria Ltd and no other person.

“For emphasis, in a garnishee proceeding, once an order of garnishee nisi is made, the garnishee is required by law to set the amount involved aside and will not allow the judgment debtor to withdraw from it; and if the order is made absolute, the garnishee pays the money to the judgment creditor and incurs no liability for doing that but if the order is not made absolute the garnishee returns the money to the judgment debtor.
Image used on the post

“In this case, the order was made absolute since 29th July 2011 and GTB held unto the money from that time and is using for its business. It follows that by the time the order was made absolute it was no more the judgment debtor’s money but rather that of Innoson Nigeria Ltd who is the judgment creditor; if a garnishee refuses to comply with the order, then, it becomes a judgment debtor, as GTB has become in the present case, against whom execution of the order will issue. Therefore, there is no merit or force in the GTB’s press statement.

“Furthermore and interestingly, the Garnishee order absolute was against GTB and no one else; and it is only GTB and no one else that will comply with the order; in the circumstance, the order will be executed against GTB and no one else.”

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) said it will not condone lateness by candidates to its 2019 Mock Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), scheduled for Monday, April 1.
Image used on the post

The board’s Head, Media and Information, Fabian Benjamin, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday, in Lagos.

NAN reports that a total of 157,631 candidates have been scheduled to sit for the optional examination in some accredited Computer Based Centres (CBT) across the country.

According to Benjamin, all is now set for the conduct of the examination by the board.

“Just like the main UTME, candidates are expected to adhere strictly to all the rules guiding the test.

“I want to say that we are fully set to conduct the mock examination, which is scheduled to hold tomorrow, Monday across some centres nationwide.

“We will also like to appeal to candidates to ensure that they get to their various centres early enough for the necessary accreditation.

“No excuse for lateness will be entertained from any candidate, as the board takes this examination as seriously as the main UTME.

“All candidates must also ensure that they do their biometrics as failure to do this will mean no examination for such candidates.

“They are also expected not to access the examination hall with all the barred items by the JAMB, such as wrist watches, handsets and others,” he said.

He added that the date for the conduct of the UTME proper would commence on April 11.

NAN also reports that the mock test is being conducted mainly to test run facilities at the various accredited centres nationwide, as well as familiarise candidates with the process.

Over 1.8 million candidates had registered for the 2019 UTME.

Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, weekend, paid an unscheduled visit to the long-abandoned sports monument and rich heritage of the state – the Enugu State Games Village – located at Awgu, the headquarters of Awgu Local Government Area.

Gov. Ugwuanyi, who painstakingly went round the historic edifice which is situated on a hilly terrain and enclosed by valleys, beautiful pine trees and other natural endowments that showcase the attributes of a tourist attraction, inspected the dilapidated facilities at the centre and promised that his administration would intervene to put the cherished monument to public use.

Historically, the game village started as a Life Camp for workers of Fougeroll Construction Company – the company that constructed the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway in the 80s.

When the company completed the road project and was about leaving the site, it handed the camp over to the state government, then old Anambra State Government.

The state government handed the facility over to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, which used it as Enugu Rangers International Football Club camp. It was later used as camp for sporting activities and thereafter as a guest facility and event centre before it was abandoned.

Details of the Gov. Ugwuanyi administration’s action plan for the utmost utilization of the centre to harness its inherent potentials for socio-economic benefits to the government and good people of the state and beyond, will be unveiled in due course.

Enugu State is truly in the hands of God. #amokelouis

Mr. Adeyemi Azeez, NANS National Public Relations Officer (PRO) made the position of the students’ body known in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

NANS alleged that it was a deliberate and well structured resolve to play out many graduates, especially those from the poor background.

“Therefore, ordinarily an undergraduate that applied for a four or five year programme will eventually end up staying nine or 10 years on campus pursuing a bachelor degree.

“NANS will not fall cheap of this deliberate attempt of disenfranchising majorly the real and qualified Nigerian graduates.

“These graduates, who have gone through rigorous stages within the Nigerian Universities and polytechnics, should not be disenfranchised of this opportunity.”

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has reacted to ‘plan’ to probe Governors Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun), Rochas Okorocha (Imo) and AbdulAziz Yari (Zamfara), once their immunity ends.

Image used on the post
Tony Orilade, EFCC Head, Media and Publicity, in a statement Sunday night, said the claim was a figment of the imagination of the reporter.

Orilade noted that everything mentioned about the setting up of the teams to probe the governors was false.

He said: “Again, the story is not true, as the EFCC does not go after anybody, including ex-governors on speculative ground.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Commission only act after the investigators have done a thorough job on any individual or firm involved in corruption related cases.

“The Commission wants to advise our stakeholders, including our friends in the media to be circumspect and verify their stories before going to press.

“Members of the public are therefore advise to disregard the story as no team has been set up against any former governor.”

Maurizio Sarri insists he will fight to remain Chelsea manager despite fans chanting for him to be sacked during their controversial 2 - 1 win at Cardiff City on Sunday.

Sarri ’ s position looked precarious when Chelsea trailed 1 - 0 against Premier League strugglers Cardiff with just six minutes remaining.

Victor Camarasa ’ s goal looked likely to dent Chelsea’ s pursuit of a top four finish and their supporters ’ anger towards Sarri was audible.
Image used on the post

But a dubious equaliser from Cesar Azpilicueta , who was clearly offside , and a stoppage - time Ruben Loftus-Cheek winner rescued Sarri ’ s team, who stay within touching distance of a place in next season ’ s Champions League.

Asked how he had felt when the chants of “ We want Sarri out ” rang out from the visiting fans , Sarri said : “ I don ’ t want to answer , but I can understand the reaction of the fans.

“ But it was probably best for them to wait until the end of the match . ”

Sarri insisted he wouldn ’ t let the supporters ’ abuse drive him out of Stamford Bridge, although he may yet have that decision taken out of his hands if Chelsea fail to qualify for the Champions League.

“ I am getting used to this and for me it’ s not a big problem . I just have to work to change their opinion , ” he said.

“ I want to stay here . When I arrived the team were 30 points behind Manchester City . I want to stay and improve results , but it is not easy work.

“ At the moment, there is a difference between Manchester City , Liverpool and us . ”

The victory keeps Chelsea in sixth place, but only a point behind fourth-placed Manchester United, and may also have emboldened Sarri to launch a staunch defence of his selection decisions.

He began with both Eden Hazard and N’ Golo Kante on the substitutes ’ bench and failed to hand an appearance to in - form England teenager Callum Hudson- Odoi.

“ Hazard cannot play 70 matches a season , ” added Sarri . “ Kante has played a lot of games and in every season there is a moment when you have to give players a rest. ”

– ‘ We were lucky’ –

Azpilicueta ’ s goal drew anger from Cardiff manager Neil Warnock and Sarri admitted his team had been fortunate that the linesman did not spot that the Chelsea skipper was in an offside position when a corner was flicked on by Marcos Alonso.

“ We were lucky with the first goal . But I think we deserved to win , ” Sarri said.

“ I haven ’ t see the replay, but Neil told me he was sure he was offside by two yards.

“ He told me about the referee ’ s decision , but I can understand the situation. ”

Chelsea looked jaded for the opening 45 minutes and although it was goalless at half - time , they fell behind less than a minute after the re - start .
A half - cleared throw - in allowed Harry Arter to set up Camarasa for a sweetly - struck half volley.

Chelsea’ s efforts to find an equaliser were thwarted by a resolute Cardiff until the 84 th minute when Azpilicueta struck.

Cardiff ’ s anger had hardly cooled by the time Loftus- Cheek stooped to head in a cross from Willian.

The result leaves Cardiff five points from safety , although they do have a game in hand on Burnley above them and the two clubs face each other in a crucial fixture in a fortnight.

Cardiff manager Neil Warnock said Azpilicueta ’ s goal only reinforced the need for the introduction of VAR into the Premier League.

“ If anybody was in doubt before today , I think VAR has got to be the answer to help them out . VAR would have sorted the goal out within seconds, ” Warnock said.

“ We ’ ve worked on things for the last three weeks and one of them is coming out at corner kicks and leaving a man in.

“ The lads have just said ‘ what we do now gaffer ?’ What ’ s the point ? You ’ ve got to hope the linesman can see it. It’ s soul- destroying really. ”

An economist from John Hopkins University in Baltimore, US, Steve Hanke, has ranked Nigeria as the sixth most miserable country in the world.

The ranking is titled, Hanke’s Annual Misery Index 2018: The World’s Saddest (And Happiest) Countries.

Writing in the Forbes magazine of March 28, the economist notes that Misery Index is calculated using economic indices such as unemployment, inflation and the rates banks charge on loans.

“In the sphere of economics, misery tends to flow from high inflation, steep borrowing costs and unemployment,” Hanke warns.
Image used on the post

The Index notes that the high rate of unemployment in Nigeria contributes largely to its unflattering rating on the Misery Index.

Hanke, in his explanatory note wrote, “The original Misery Index was just a simple sum of a nation’s annual inflation rate and its unemployment rate.

“The Index has been modified several times, first by Robert Barro of Harvard and then by myself.

“My modified Misery Index is the sum of the unemployment, inflation and bank lending rates, minus the percentage change in real GDP per capita.

“Higher readings on the first three elements are ‘bad’ and make people more miserable. These are offset by a ‘good’ (GDP per capita growth), which is subtracted from the sum of the ‘bads.’

“A higher Misery Index score reflects a higher level of ‘misery,’ and it’s a simple enough metric that a busy president, without time for extensive economic briefings, can understand at a glance.”

Thailand and Hungary rank as the least miserable countries in the world on the 2018 Misery Index, having ranked 95th and 94th respectively of the 95 countries ranked by Hanke.

Venezuela, Argentina, Iran, Brazil and Turkey lead in that order, while Nigeria is sixth.

Cardiff manager Neil Warnock admitted he was so angry with his side’s controversial defeat against Chelsea that he might play a weakened team at Manchester City on Wednesday.
Warnock was furious that Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta was allowed to head a late equaliser from a clearly offside position as the Blues hit back to win 2-1 on Sunday.

Relegation-threatened Cardiff had been leading with just six minutes left, but Azpilicueta’s goal was followed by more controversy as Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger escaped a red card despite hauling down Kenneth Zohore.
Image used on the post
Cardiff also felt they could have had two penalties, but it was Chelsea who took the points through Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s stoppage-time header.

“It hurts. The referee had a decent game but we didn’t get the major decisions. The linesman, though…It is so disappointing. Chelsea know they have got away with murder today,” Warnock said.

“When you don’t win and it is nothing to do with ourselves it is a kick in the teeth.

“Against the big teams you have to have VAR because you don’t get the big decisions.

“The equalising goal is the winning goal really, and if you can’t see across the line and see offside I don’t know why we are in the game.

“I look at the two penalties we should have had and the red card against Kenneth Zohore.

“The biggest and best league in the world but probably the worst officials at the minute.”

Cardiff are five points from safety but have a game in hand at title-chasing City in midweek.

After being denied a chance to close the gap on their relegation rivals, Warnock claimed he might even surrender the points by fielding his youngest players in a match they are likely to lose anyway against Pep Guardiola’s side.

While Warnock is likely to change his mind once his anger subsides, his team selection will be closely monitored by Liverpool, who are fighting with City for the title.

“We keep getting knock-backs, I will probably play the U23s on Wednesday against Manchester City and try to keep it down to 10 or 11,” Warnock said.

“It doesn’t matter who you play at the minute, it is who has a flag in his hand and who has a whistle.”

Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri conceded his team had been fortunate to escape with three points that kept their top four bid alive.

Blues fans chanted for the under-fire Sarri to be sacked in the second half before their comeback gave him a little breathing space.

“They were probably unhappy for the result. I can understand, I can understand very well. I am getting used to this,” Sarri said.

“We were a little bit nervous. We didn’t play well in the first half and we conceded a stupid goal.

“In the end we deserved to win. I don’t know if the goal was offside, I have to see the situation. Sometimes we can be lucky.”

An official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Seriki Adeyinka has narrated how a taxi driver hit her and drove off on high speed while she hung on the bonnet of his car in Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

Adeyinka, who spoke to The Nation said the incident happened around 6:35 pm on Thursday, noting that she was on the car’s bonnet from Igbogbo garage on Ikorodu road to Oluwanishola filling station on Baiyeku road.
Image used on the post
She said she resumed to her duty post at Igbogbo garage at 2pm on Thursday before the incident happened around 6:35pm.

“I was at my duty post with another colleague. Usually, anytime from 4pm, traffic gets busy in the area. We were controlling the traffic when the taxi driver was coming and also picking passengers at the middle of the road, he caused a lot of traffic behind him. We told him to leave the middle of the road but he refused, I was trying to stop him to let him know that what he was doing on the road was bad, but while he sped off, he hit me with the car and I fell on the bonnet of the car”.

“If I had not fallen on the bonnet, the car will have crushed on me. When I fell on the bonnet, instead of him to wait, he moved on with a high speed. I struggled to hold something on the bonnet; he still drove on high speed and was swerving, trying to throw me down but I held something. While the car was moving people were trying to stop him but he was speeding and no one could stop him”.

“Even when a trailer was coming, he tried to swerve me to the trailer maybe I would fall off from the bonnet, but as God would have it, I did not fall because I was holding the bonnet tightly. But thank God an eyewitness who was driving behind was later able to overtake him and he stopped at Oluwanishola filling station on Baiyeku road”.

Adeyinka said her hands were still paining her as she used it to hold the bonnet tightly. She said she is still in pains on her knee which the vehicle hit, adding that her shoulder was dislocated. She said she is still under treatment.

“It should not be when LASTMA officials are killed that it should be taken up. This taxi driver should pay for what he has done, it is total wickedness and to me he is like a murderer, he should get the consequences of what he has done,” she said.

An eyewitness, Oyeyemi Akieu, a Security Expert, Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer, Indepth Watcher Security Services, said he was on his way to his Ikorodu home when he saw the incident.

“I was going home that Thursday, when I got to Igbogbo garage, there was traffic and the LASTMA officials were trying to clear it. As I moved forward, I saw that people were putting their hands on their head and saying, ‘do you want to kill her. I tried to look ahead of me to see what was happening, and then I saw three vehicles ahead of me was a lady LASTMA official on the bonnet of moving vehicle and the driver was not waiting for her to come down. She was shouting ‘will you stop, I must not fall, let me come down’, but the driver was just swerving the car as if he wanted to throw her to an oncoming vehicle.

Akieu, who video recorded the incident said; “This made me to bring out my phone and I started recording the session. The distance he carried her was about 500 meters, it lasted for about five minutes.

“I overtook the cars ahead of me, I overtook him and stopped at the front of his car at the filling station, so he had no choice than to stop. Immediately he did, the okada riders and passer-by who saw what was happening ran towards him not long, other LASTMA officials and the mopol came around.”

Akieu said: “For this to have happened day time, it shows the kind of person the driver is, How can a man leave a woman on the bonnet of a moving car, the bonnet will be hot because the car was moving, the man must have killed someone before, to have had the capacity to do such in daylight. He cannot be an ordinary man because an average mind will be afraid of the law, people around and the uniform she was wearing. The woman must be strong for her not to have fallen. He wanted to kill her but she held on to the bonnet.”

He called for proper investigation on the driver. “If his background is well investigated, that man must be a criminal, but thank God the woman did not die,” he said.

Zonal Head, Zone 33, Ogolonto, Ikorodu, Kayode Odunuga, said he received a distressed call from Adeyinka and her colleague, Yusuf, around past 7 that Thursday that they needed attention.

“We urgently called the attention of the commander of mobile unit 63 Igbogbo, where they deployed three armed men to trace our officials down to the scene of the incident. The vehicle was recovered but the driver took to heels. The vehicle was taken to Igbogbo police station and statement was taken.

“We learnt the driver lives in the area; he fled when he sighted the police at the scene,” he said.

A woman Ebun Efunkoya at the weekend took to social media to narrate how she was hypnotised and defrauded over a million naira by a criminal syndicate operating with a tricycle.

The incident, according to the woman, occurred on Friday morning, March 22, near Eko Hotel where she boarded the tricycle enroute her office along Ligali Ayorinde.
“I boarded a keke napep at Eko Hotel roundabout heading to my office at Ligali Ayorinde, just a 50 naira distance. A lady was in the keke already, and then I entered. Few seconds after, a man entered also, putting me in the middle.

“He then alighted at a bus stop not so far and next thing he gets down and stretches to the driver dollar bills. The driver gets furious and is like he should go, the driver then calls him back and asks him why dollar bills?

“He starts speaking French fluently about how he is a foreigner and has never been to the country and due to that he has been scammed a lot in the past two days. The driver says get in. I would help you.”

Continuing, the woman said she was becoming impatient with the delays and only wanted to get to work but the driver started asking her and the other lady if they could follow him to a Bureau De Change (BDC) to change the dollar bills because he was scared the driver might dupe him.

Oblivious of this old trick by fraudsters, the lady who said she didn’t reply the man, however replied the lady who tapped her and suggested they helped the ‘foreigner’.

“The lady became really teary and tapped me, then said “madam can you hear what is going on, people are duping this foreigner, let’s help him”.

“Then, I finally spoke. I said “sorry I am late for work. l cannot”. The lady began to talk about how she was also going somewhere but that we should be Good Samaritans and good Christians.

“I didn’t know when we passed my office and landed at a market and then I got into a car and the rest was history. I did not go to work that Friday as I spent the day with them.

“A pastor came into the picture and started telling me specific things about myself, more like he was ‘prophesying. He was quoting bible scriptures, praying in tongues, praise and worship. One thing led to another and I was duped N220,000 that Friday.

“But did it end there? No. Still under whatever influence I was put on, I got home that Friday/ Saturday morning and started borrowing money from my friends like a mad woman. I got the money easily because of course, it’s Ebun, she is my friend, and I trust her so why won’t I borrow her. (Only if they knew and I knew).

“It went further, I packed mine and my mom’s gold jeweleries, her cash at home and her ATM cards also. I left the house with my two feet and headed for Idimu, mind you I had a ton of stuff to do on that Saturday but I went my dears, just like a zombie.

“I got to them, they welcomed me, hugged me and the evangelist said it was time to bless all I brought and do

“deliverance. Now I was instructed to switch off my phone (so that the alerts as the withdrawals were going
on won’t be seen, I discovered this way later). They withdrew over N460,000 that I borrowed from friends and also my business money, took my phone (iPhone X), my wig, my smart watch, the gold jeweleries and emptied all my bank accounts!”

According to her, she later regained consciousness around 11pm on Saturday and borrowed a stranger’s phone to call her sister thinking she was at Iyana Ipaja only to discover her location was farther.

“She told me to get a cab and come home straight. I got home and everything was still a blurr. I then
started getting understanding and stable consciousness after. More like something was lifted from my eyes and my brain was opened.

“Yes, it happened to me and it is still happening in this day and age. It was not one day but two days. If you love humanity and human life, share this for awareness. No one deserves this traumatising experience. Nothing like let’s be more careful, just do not engage in any conversations with any stranger. As many good people there are, double of the number are bad people also,” the woman wrote.

Contacted, police spokesman Bala Elkana, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP) said the incident was not reported at any police station.

He said: “The matter has not been reported to us. The lesson contained in the victim’s narrative is worth learning. It shows that all those involved are members of the swindling syndicate. Passengers in public transport need to be careful when relating with strangers. Report such suspicious persons to any police team on the road,” he said.

Liverpool moved back top of the Premier League in dramatic fashion as Toby Alderweireld’s last minute own goal beat Tottenham 2-1 at Anfield on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp’s side move two points clear of Manchester City once more at the top of the table, but City have a game in hand.

Lucas Moura's second-half goal cancelled out Roberto Firmino's opener to leave the Reds facing the prospect of being behind Manchester City on goal difference, only for Toby Alderweireld to turn the ball into his own net in the 90th minute when Lloris failed to hold a Mohamed Salah header.

With City beating Fulham comfortably on Saturday, Jurgen Klopp's side were in need of a positive result to keep the pressure on the champions, who play again at home to Cardiff City on Wednesday.

The only shot on target of the first half proved the difference at the interval, with Firmino running into the space between Spurs' centre-back trio to head in Andrew Robertson's precise cross.

Spurs did threaten, though, even if Alisson's goal was untroubled, with Lucas and Dele Alli each coming close with efforts from the edge of the box.

Alisson had to parry a Harry Kane strike before Christian Eriksen's follow-up was blocked by Robertson as Spurs stepped up the pressure after the break.

Salah then wasted a good chance on the break for Liverpool and Spurs punished their hosts 70 minutes in, when Eriksen's scuffed effort from Kieran Trippier's cut-back was fired beyond Alisson by the arriving Lucas.

The visitors should have won it themselves inside the final five minutes, but Moussa Sissoko blasted over the crossbar after being sent clear by Son Heung-min's smart lay-off.

And Liverpool made them pay as the game ticked towards injury time, when Salah headed Trent Alexander-Arnold's looping cross goalwards and Lloris could only push the ball off Alderweireld and over the line.

Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) says it is taking all necessary legal steps to ensure that no illegal or fraudulent execution is carried out over its court case with Innoson Motors.
Innoson Nigeria Ltd. had announced that it obtained a writ of Fifa from the Federal High Court in Awka, Anambra State, against GTB.

According to the company, the writ is to effect the judgment given by the Federal High Court in Ibadan and upheld by the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

The Company Secretary of GTB, Mr Erhi Obebeduo, in a statement, however, assured the bank’s customers of the safety of their funds.

In its clarification, GTB said the judgement was applicable to the account of the Nigerian Customs Service Board domiciled with the bank, rather than the bank as an entity.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Sunday said it has not raised teams to probe or interrogate some of the outgoing governors.

It said it does not go after anybody, including ex-governors on speculative ground.

The EFCC, which made the clarifications in a statement by its Acting Head of Media and Publicity, Mr. Tony Orilade, said it used to only act after the investigators have done a thorough job on any individual or firm involved in corruption-related cases.

The statement said: “The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission( EFCC) has been drawn to a lead story of a newspaper of March 31, 2019, titled: “EFCC raises teams to quiz Amosun, Okocha, Yari as immunity ends.

“The newspaper had claimed that ahead of May 29, 2019, handover date to newly elected states helmsmen, the Commission has set up teams to probe some governors accused of perpetuating acts of corruption.

“It is instructive to note that the reporter did not give the composition and terms of reference of the purported teams set up by the EFCC.
Image used on the post
“The report is a figment of the imagination of the reporter as everything about the setting of the teams ended with the first paragraph without details of such teams being set up.

“Again, the story is not true, as the EFCC does not go after anybody, including ex-governors on speculative ground.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Commission only act after the investigators have done a thorough job on any individual or firm involved in corruption-related cases.

“The Commission wants to advise our stakeholders, including our friends in the media to be circumspect and verify their stories before going to press.

“Members of the public are therefore advised to disregard the story as no team has been set up against any former governor.”

Ingredients

for 6 servings

8 oz shredded cheddar cheese (225 g)
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature
1 teaspoon kosher salt
3 teaspoons McCormick® Savory Spice Blend
1 cup all-purpose flour (125 g)
3 tablespoons ice water

Preparation

Preheat the oven to 350˚F (180˚C).
In a large bowl with an electric hand mixer add the cheddar cheese, butter, Savory spice blend, and salt until well combined.
Mix in the flour and add the ice water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the dough holds together but crumbles apart if you break it up in your hand. If it seems too dry, add a little more ice water.
Divide the dough into 2 halves and pack together in discs. Wrap in parchment paper and chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
Roll out dough to ⅛-inch (½-centimeter) thick, pinching the cracks on the ends. Cut into 1-inch (2½-centimeter) squares and poke a hole in the center of each square for ventilation during baking.
Separate the crackers and place on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.
Bake for 13 minutes, or until golden brown.
Enjoy!

Iowa soybean farmers organized a trade mission to China this week in hopes of maintaining relationships with their former buyers -- if and when a truce is reached by their respective governments.
Image used on the post
"As trade negotiations seem to be moving forward, it's very important for us to meet with the Chinese importers and let them know we're still here, we still have soybeans and we still want to sell them to you," said Tim Bardole, a soy grower from Rippey, Iowa, and president-elect of the Iowa Soybean Association.

Though neither party can do anything until normal trade is restored between the United States and China, trade team members said they quickly learned that Chinese buyers are as eager for an end to the trade war as U.S. producers.

"It's definitely obvious with everyone we talk to that this is high-level governments disputing," Bardole said. "It's not farmer against processor over here. They know it has hurt us, and we know it has hurt them, and we want a resolution as soon as possible for both our countries."

China has maintained high tariffs on U.S. soybeans -- and other commodities -- for nearly a year. The government imposed those tariffs in response to $200 billion in tariffs President Donald Trump placed on Chinese goods.

Ever since, soy trade between the two countries slowed to a trickle, leaving millions of bushels of American beans with nowhere to go -- and farmers with substantially less income. China had been America's leading soy importer, buying up about one-third of all the oil seeds grown in the U.S.

The Trump administration responded by offering "Market Facilitation Program" payments to offset farmers' losses in the trade dispute.

"The market facilitation payments that we got from the government almost got us to break-even," Bardole said. "But not quite. That's common across the corn belt."

On the Chinese side, soy importers looked to Brazil to fill their demand.

"Brazil has been selling soybeans to China priced so they're just a little cheaper than out of the U.S. with the tariffs," Bardole said. The Chinese buyers "understood that Brazil was doing good business, making money. But it didn't make the buyers happy."

So far, China has purchased around 12.7 million tons of soybeans from the U.S. since imposing the tariffs, according to Reuters. Last year, the country bought more than 28.5 million tons, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture data.

"But the soybeans they bought from the U.S. have gone to government-owned crushers," Bardole said. (A crusher is a company that buys beans in bulk and "crushes" them into soybean meal to feed to livestock, fish and chickens.)

"Private crushers didn't have access to those soybeans," he said. "So the state crushers have been able to sell meal at a lower price than the private ones can."

With both economies hurting, the Iowa Soybean Association and other similar groups continue pressuring the Trump administration to end the trade war.

Last week, members of the Iowa Soybean Association met with the U.S. trade ambassadors to ask them for a swift end to the tariffs.

"It's an active negotiation," Bardole said. "Nobody is going to show their hand. But, as a soybean producer, I feel a lot more positive about what I'm hearing now than a month ago."

The Iowa Soybean Association's trade mission coincided with the latest round of trade talks between the two governments led by U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin in Beijing this week. The negotiations will continue next month when Chinese Vice Premier Liu He comes to Washington, D.C.

A deal may end the trade war, but President Donald Trump has said he plans to leave tariffs in place "for a substantial period of time" after a deal is reached.

Empire actor Jussie Smollett was the target of mockery at the NAACP Image Awards and on Saturday Night Live this weekend.
Image used on the post
"They said no Jussie Smollett jokes. I know. What a waste of white skin. You know what I could do with that light skin? That curly hair? My career would be out of here. (Expletive) running Hollywood," Variety reported comedian Chris Rock joked at the NAACP Image Awards in Los Angeles.

"What the hell was he thinking?" Rock wondered aloud. "From now on, you're Jessie from now on. You don't even get the 'U' no more. That 'U' was respect. You don't get no respect from me."

Smollett, who was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Empire, was a no-show. The award was won by Jesse Williams from ABC's Grey's Anatomy.

SNL also lampooned Smollett's recent legal troubles with a sketch showing SNL player Chris Redd as Smollett arriving late to a meeting with his manager (played by guest host Sandra Oh) and the executives behind Empire.

The show's creator Lee Daniels (played by Kenan Thompson) and staffers (played by Mikey Day, Kate McKinnon and Ego Nwodim) want to fire Smollett because they don't believe he was really the victim of a hate crime in Chicago as he has claimed.

The real Smollett had been charged for allegedly orchestrating a racial and homophobic assault against himself, then lying repeatedly about it to authorities. The charges were dropped last week.

His actual fate on Empire remains unclear as he continues to publicly state he was the victim of a crime.

"I was attacked again," Redd as Smollett told the disbelieving people in the SNL sketch as he burst into the meeting with bruises on his face and a red, Make America Great Again hat on his head.

He then seemed surprised to find what he described as "a bag of clues" hanging off of his arm.

As his manager pleaded with him to stop telling his outlandish story, Smollett opened the bag to reveal teeth-whitening strips, three letter Ks, a store receipt, car keys and a purple, Teletubby doll.

"Jussie, this is absolutely ridiculous," Thompson as Daniels said.

McKinnon's character suggested Smollett call the police if he was really attacked a second time.

"No, no, no, no, no. They said I can never call again as part of the deal," Smollett said.

"Jussie, you know we've got to fire you, right?" Daniels asked.

"You can't fire me. I made this show! I am the gay Lee Daniels!" Smollett proclaimed.

"Jussie, I am the gay Lee Daniels," Daniels said after which Smollett's manager also fires him and Smollett storms out of the room.

"I just hope he gets the help he needs," his manager said.

Smollett comes back into the room with his jacket hanging half off of his body and a brace on his neck, yelling, "Guys, oh my God, you're not going to believe what happened to me this time!"

The sketch ended with everyone telling him, "Get out of here," and "Go home."
