Crisis hits Oyo AD as two gubernatorial candidates emerge in parallel primaries

The Oyo State chapter of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) on Saturday broke into two factions, DAILY POST reports.

The development became evident after factional gubernatorial primary elections were held at separate locations in Ibadan, the state capital Saturday afternoon.

The two primary elections saw the emergence of Mr. Oyedele Hakeem Alao, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and a former Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Dr. Akin Onigbinde.

Alao emerged at the primary election conducted by caretaker committee of the party led by Pastor Akin Alamum, which was held in an hotel on Old Ife Road while Onigbinde emerged during the primary election held along Iwo Road-Ojoo Express Way, which was organised Mr. Michael Akinropo-led state executive of the party.

Alao, while addressing journalists at the end of the primary election that produced him as the gubernatorial candidate, appreciated the delegates, party leaders and members for finding him worthy of flying the ticket of the party.

He said, “On behalf of the leadership of our party at the National, State, Local Governments and Wards level, I sincerely accept this victory and I am assuring our teeming members a great outing in 2019 elections.

“As we rise from this venue, let us tell our neighbors and let our neighbors tell their neighbors that Alliance for Democracy is back and AD is alive.

“It is not yet Uhuru until we are able to give APC, PDP and ADC a run for their money. The coming election is between good and bad, the oppressors and the oppressed, the conservatives and the progressives. Do not be disturbed or distracted. We have all it takes to be victorious at the poll. Let us go out and preach the gospel of redemption – Irapada”.

In the same vein, Onigbinde emerged through the nomination and affirmation by the delegates unopposed alongside three senatorial candidates, 12 house of representatives candidates and 32 house of assembly flag bearers.

Onigbinde in his own acceptance speech at the primary election that produced him, also thanked the national leadership, state executives, local government executives and all the delegates for the confidence reposed in him to fly the flag of the party.
