Yara Shahidi's Harvard roommate better get used to NPR podcasts

Yara Shahidi will be packing her bags and heading to Boston in a few weeks, where she’ll start her college career at Harvard.

“I want to have as much of a college experience as possible,” the 18-year-old actress told The Hollywood Reporter. “That’s why I decided to apply in the first place.”

Modal TriggerLast year, news broke that Shahidi had enlisted former First Lady Michelle Obama to write her a letter of recommendation. That, along with several other important pieces, granted her admission into Harvard, Yale, Stanford and HBCU Spelman College.

But it seems her college application essays were a hit as well. One was written on “this idea that people perpetuate that you have to choose between education and entertainment,” she said. The second was a letter to her future roommate describing all the things she’ll have to bear — including the chocolate she often hides in her bed and the constant blare of NPR podcasts.

While at Harvard, Shahidi plans to major in sociology and African-American studies.

But once the semester is underway, she’ll have to leave campus for Los Angeles to begin shooting the next season of the“Black-ish” spinoff “Grown-ish.” She is expected to keep up with some of her class work online.

Now more than ever, her schedule will be busy from sunrise to sunset. But that doesn’t mean she’ll neglect one of her many passions in life — activism. She recently launched an initiative, Eighteen X 18, to get teens registered to vote and is planning its first national summit in September.

“My passion really stemmed from having gone through the 2016 election, where myself and many of my peers were unable to vote,” the actress explained. “A lot of them went with their parents to the polls, but there was that feeling of being lost. Like, ‘What can we do to contribute to our sociopolitical landscape?'”

With her plate full, she maintains her transition to college will be smooth.
