Samsung's Galaxy Note 9 Is Very Expensive

In a pair of tweets, WinFuture’s (historically near-flawless) Roland Quandt has revealed the Galaxy Note 9 will be by far the most expensive phone Samsung has ever released. In fact, at the top end, it will be the most expensive mass-market smartphone ever sold.

In a pair of tweets (1,2), Quandt said the Galaxy Note 9 will cost £899 ($1,165) for the 128GB entry-level model, and £1,099 ($1,420) for the massive 512GB edition.

UK pricing (which always includes sales tax) has provided a consistently reliable model for mapping US prices down the years. So given the Galaxy Note 8’s UK price of £869 translated to $950 at launch, the 128GB Galaxy Note 9 looks set to come in at $1,000, while the 512GB edition is headed for a $1,200 asking price - $50 more than Apple’s top of the range iPhone X.

Of course, the one consolation here is the Galaxy Note 9 is coming in much bigger storage sizes. Apple’s iPhone X has 64GB and 256GB options, while the Galaxy Note 8 only launched with 64GB in the US. That said, with a 512GB-compatible microSD card built-in, many potential buyers would surely have prefered the option of a 64GB Galaxy Note 9 for under $900.

As such, given Samsung has staked the future of the Galaxy Note range on sales of the Galaxy Note 9, it appears this could be the end of the road. Especially considering the headline feature pulled from the phone early in its development.

If this is to be the last Galaxy Note, however, at least the Galaxy Note 9 is going out in true Note-style. All its biggest updates are about size, including the range’s largest display, most RAM and biggest battery. It will also be the smartest Note ever.

Granted, the Galaxy Note 9 is not as exciting as next year’s 10th anniversary Galaxy S10 or the upcoming folding Galaxy F, but the latter has an eye-watering price tag which makes the Note 9 look cheap. So perhaps it’s wise to buy Samsung’s final Note while you still can…
