"For month I have been warning that the humanitarian, security and political crisis in Gaza risks a devastating conflict that nobody wants. The UN has engaged with Egypt and all concerned parties in an unprecedented effort to avoid such a development.

"Our collective efforts have prevented the situation from exploding until now., If the current escalation however is not contained immediately, the situation can rapidly deteriorate with devastating consequences for all people.

"We will continue working hard to ensure that Gaza steps back from the brink, that all humanitarian issues are addressed and that Egyptian-led efforts to achieve intra-Palestinian reconciliation succeed."

[22:30] IDF: 12 terrorist targets hit in Gaza

The IDF announced 12 terrorist targets were hit as a result of Wednesday night's rocket fire from Gaza.

The IAF struck targets that included a factory used for producing materials used for building tunnels, a tunnel intended for maritime terrorism as well as other strategic Hamas targets on their military sites which held a variety of weapons, rockets as well as a military compound that serves as a central logistic warehouse were also hit by IAF jets.

The IDF said that the attack was carried out in retaliation to the rockets launched into israel earlier today.

So far 16 people have been treated for injuries from today's rocket attacks.

According to Magen David Adom, EMTs and paramedics treated and evacuated three of the injured to the Barzilai Medical Center while an addition 13 suffered shock related symptoms.

The IDF has reported 36 rockets have been launched from the Gaza Strip into Israel throughout Wednesday.

The Iron Dome system intercepted four of these rockets, most of which landed in open fields.

[20:20] Two injured in shrapnel from Iron Dome interception

Two people were injured Wednesday after shrapnel from an Iron Dome missile landed in the southern Israeli city of Sderot.

According to Magen David Adom rescue services the two were evacuated to Barzilai Medical Center. A 34 year old was in light to moderate condition with wounds from glass shards and a 20 year old in light condition with injuries to his limbs.

Another eight civilians were treated at the scene after suffering from stress, including 2 pregnant women.Two homes in Sderot were also reportedly hit by the shrapnel and several cars were damaged.

An IDF tank struck a Hamas post in the northern Gaza Strip, the army said on Wednesday. Earlier, shots were fired at a construction vehicle doing work on the border fence between Gaza and Israel.

No injuries were reported in the shooting, but a vehicle was damaged.
