The plane hit power cables as it came down in remote marshland on the Isle of Wight.

The pilot, a man, and his female passenger have both escaped with their lives but sustained serious injuries.

A spokesman for Hampshire Police said: ‘The pilot and passenger, a man and a woman, have sustained serious injuries and have been taken to Southampton General Hospital by air ambulance.’

The four-seater aircraft crashed just outside Bembridge Airport at about 3.50pm on Thursday.

Inspector Adam Henderson-Parish said: ‘We have worked closely with our colleagues from the fire and ambulance services.

‘We remain at the scene and are liaising with the Air Accidents Investigation Branch.’

Crews from Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were forced to walk to reach the remote crash site – and used a 4×4 to carry their cutting equipment.

It was thought that a Chinook may be called in to recover the wreckage.
