Donald Trump holds hands with Theresa May in awkward public display of affection

Donald Trump is hardly known for his chivalry and last night he made a clumsy attempt to hold Theresa May’s hand.

As they climbed the steps at Blenheim Palace, the US President appeared to take the Prime Minister’s arm.

It was not an exactly natural motion because at one point, he seemed to grasp thin air before they pair linked hands.

Mr Trump is said to have a fear of slopes or stairs, known as bathmophobia.

He has also previously admitted how much he hates shaking hands because of the risk of germs – referring to himself as a ‘clean hands freak’.

That being said, he is known to try to exert his dominance over political opponents by lengthy handshakes.

Maybe he should look to Theresa May’s husband Philip for tips.

The pension fund manager was the model gentleman last night as he escorted Melania up the same stairs of Blenheim Palace.

The two couples were entertained by a military band in bearskin hats before a sumptuous meal at the former home of Second World War leader Winston Churchill.

Trump was wearing a tuxedo and first lady Melania in a butter-yellow chiffon gown.

May’s crimson dress drew attention to a white patch on her arm, used to help her control her diabetes.

While Trump may have offered a hand up the stairs, it appears he won’t give Theresa May a helping hand in political life.

He declared he thinks her political rival Boris Johnson would make a great prime minister and all-but-killed a US trade deal because of May’s approach to Brexit.

Mrs May went on a charm offensive saying there was an ‘unprecedented’ opportunity to do a deal that boosted jobs and growth in both the UK and US.

However this morning it was shot down by Trump who claimed Mrs May’s ‘business-friendly’ approach to Brexit would kill any deal.

‘If they do a deal like that, we would be dealing with the European Union instead of dealing with the UK, so it will probably kill the deal. ‘If they do that, then their trade deal with the US will probably not be made.’

The pair will have a working lunch at Chequers today.
