Death row inmate's extravagant last meal request

A murderer on death row in the US has made an extravagant request for a hearty last meal.

Keith Leroy Tharpe asked for three spicy chicken breasts, a roast beef sandwich with sauce, a fish sandwich, tater logs (potato wedges), onion rings, apple pie and a vanilla milkshake.

Tharpe is scheduled to be executed at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison on September 26.

He has been on death row since 1990 after murdering his sister-in-law Jaquelyn Freeman in front of his estranged wife.

He was previously meant to face the lethal injection in September last year, but the US Supreme Court granted him a temporary stay less than 24 hours before.

Tharpe's lawyers argued Tharpe is intellectually disabled and one of his jurors was racially biased against him.

"After studying the Bible, I have wondered if black people even have souls," juror Barney Gattie said after the case.

In the hours before he was granted the stay of execution, Tharpe recorded an apology to Freeman's family.

"You know because, uh, you know, me taking the life of her was very wrong and uh, I sincerely wish y'all would be able to be forgiving one day," he was quoted as saying.

"You know and uh, like I say, I'ma say it again, I'm very sorry. And, uh, and, God bless y'all. That's all I can say."

His appeal was rejected after the stay and his execution was rescheduled for another year.

Prisoners in the US can ask for anything for a last meal, but according to Slate's Christopher Beam, their requests are not always met.

"When an inmate requests filet mignon—which happens a lot—the chef will instead cook up a steak hamburger, since that's what they already have in the kitchen," he wrote.

"When a Texas inmate requested 24 tacos, the chef made four."

Popular choices include cheeseburgers, steaks and fried chicken.

Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh famously ate a tub of mint chocolate-chip ice cream as his last meal.

Serial killer Aileen Wuornos opted for black coffee.
