Ikea apologises after child shoots gun found inside couch in Indiana store

A six-year-old has fired a gun in an Ikea store in Indiana after finding a firearm that fell from a customer's pocket onto a couch, police say.

A man accidentally dropped the gun while sitting down to test a couch in the store and did not realise it was missing when he sat up again, police told local media.

The child found the gun a few minutes later and fired it into the couch cushions.

The gun owner, who continued browsing the store after dropping the gun, reportedly only noticed it was missing when he heard gunfire.

No-one was hurt in the incident and no-one has been arrested, police said.

"As soon as he realised there was a commotion in the store, the gun-owner quickly identified himself … and fully co-operated with the investigation," Sergeant Tom Weger, from Fishers Police Department, Indiana, told The Washington Post.

Ikea offered its "sincerest apologies" to the family of the child and said it had a "no weapon" policy in its stores.

"As soon as we were made aware of the situation, our co-workers took the action they were trained to do to ensure the safety of customers," Ikea said in a statement.

"We are cooperating with police as they investigate this incident."

Police in Fishers, Indiana, used the incident to remind gun owners to be responsible.

"It's important to remember that if you are going to carry a firearm on your person, that you make sure you're under control of it at all times," Sergeant Weger told local broadcaster WTTV.
