Hong Kong, Tokyo, Zurich world's most expensive cities; NYC at No. 13

Hong Kong is the world's most expensive city for expatriates, according to a new ranking of cities around the world.

Asia dominates the list of Mercer's annual cost of living report -- with Hong Kong at the top and Tokyo second, followed by Singapore in fourth, Seoul fifth, Shanghai seventh and Beijing ninth.

The survey ranked 209 cities across five continents and compared costs of more than 200 items, like housing, transportation, food and clothing.

"Stronger Chinese monetary regulation, a flourishing economy and a push to have the Chinese Yuan as an international currency pushed Chinese cities up in the ranking," said Yvonne Traber, Mercer's global mobility product solutions leader.

Fluctuation in Asian currencies was also cited as a reason for the Far East nations' appearances atop the list.

Other cities in the top 10 -- Zurich, Switzerland (No. 3); Luanda, Angola (No. 6); N'Djamena, Chad (No. 8); and Bern, Switzerland (No. 10). New York City is the highest-ranking U.S. city, at No. 13, followed by San Francisco (No. 28) and Los Angeles (No. 35).

The least expensive cities are Tashkent, Uzbekistan (No. 209); Tunis, Tunisia (No. 208); and Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (No. 207). The least-expensive U.S. city on the list is Winston-Salem, N.C., at No. 161.

Mercer uses New York as the baseline city, measuring currency moves against the dollar. The report also includes a comparison chart that shows London as the most expensive place to see a movie and Moscow as the most expensive city to purchase blue jeans.

Other cities with a hefty price tag on items include Seoul, which averages the most expensive coffee, Zurich for a fast food hamburger and Hong Kong for gasoline.
