Liverpool star Sadio Mane scored a penalty as Senegal began their Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Tunisia.
Mane has been in sublime form for the Reds this season and it took the forward just 10 minutes to break the deadlock in Franceville, Gabon.
The 24-year-old scored from the spot in the Group B clash, before Kara Mbodji doubled Senegal’s lead before half-time.
Senegal, the early favourites to win the tournament, face Zimbabwe in their next game on Thursday.

1. Senegal (3 points)
2. Algeria (1 point)
3. Zimbabwe (1 point)
4. Tunisia (0 points)

When will Mane return to Liverpool?

As the final group-stage games conclude on Wednesday 25 January, Liverpool were aware before Senegal’s opener that Mane would miss at least six games for the Reds.
However, the victory against Tunisia, along with Algeria’s shock draw with Zimbabwe, has put Senegal on the verge of qualifying for the quarter-finals, which are held on January 28/29.Sadio Mane scores in AFCON victory - but when will Senegal star return to Liverpool?

If Senegal do reach the next round, but fail to win their quarter-final clash, it is therefore possible Mane could make his return against leaders Chelsea on 31 January, although the energetic forward would likely miss out.

Liverpool fixtures

Plymouth – FA Cup (H) – Tue 17 or Wed 18 Jan
Swansea (H) – Sat 21 Jan
Southampton – EFL Cup (H) – Wed 25 Jan
Chelsea (H) – Tue 31 Jan
Hull (A) – Sat 4 Feb
If Senegal were to reach the semi-finals, which take place on February 1 & 2, Mane, the most expensive African player in history, will also be ruled out of the trip to Hull the following weekend.

This is because even a defeat will ensure the nation has to take part in the third-place play-off on February 4, the same day as Liverpool’s clash with struggling Hull.
