Per Mertesacker has agreed a new deal with Arsenal, according to reports.
The centre-back has not played at all this season after suffering knee and calf injuries and he is still not ready to return to action.
But despite his lack of action, Arsenal have agreed a new one-year deal with the German, who will earn £70,000-a-week, according to The Times.
Arsene Wenger will consider sending him out on loan for the rest of this season but wants to keep him at the Emirates for another year.
As a good leader, Mertesacker has qualities that make him valuable to have around in the dressing room and Wenger demonstrated how much he values his influence on younger players by making the 32-year-old club captain.

Mertesacker’s renewal follows the recent extensions of Olivier Giroud, Laurent Koscielny and Francis Coquelin and leaves Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Kieran Gibbs as the only first-team players with contracts expiring in the next 18 months.
