Orlando soccer club honors nightclub victims in new stadium

ORLANDO, Fla., Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Nearly 50 victims of a gay nightclub shooting in central Florida last year will be part of a new major league soccer stadium in Orlando for a long time.
Orlando City Soccer Club unveiled 49 rainbow-colored seats in the new facility Thursday -- one for each victim killed last June in the Pulse nightclub attack.

"We made a commitment on that day that we would commemorate, forever, in the new stadium a memory of the 49 victims that lost their lives that day," team president Phil Rawlins said in dedicating the seats Thursday. "We're here to commemorate and unveil the 49 rainbow seats that will sit permanently in section 12 of our new stadium as a constant reminder of the senseless acts of June 12."
Each seat is either blue, green, yellow, red or orange -- and features the word "OrlandoUnited." The rest of the seats in the stadium are purple.
The $155 million Orlando City Stadium is set to open March 5 when the Orlando City Lions open the 2017 season.
