Jamie Redknapp has insisted Olivier Giroud’s spectacular scorpion kick goal does not even make it into his top 20 goals ever scored in the Premier League.
Arsenal star Giroud’s improvised stroke of genius against Crystal Palace stunned the football world and could earn him a goal of the season accolade.
But Redknapp, a former Tottenham and Liverpool player, says the goal does not rate alongside the great strikes in the top flight because it was down to luck.
‘Olivier Giroud’s scorpion kick against Crystal Palace is the best improvised goal I have ever seen,’ Redknapp wrote in the Daily Mail.
‘It wasn’t something we thought he had in his locker — it was the sort of goal you would associate more with Alexis Sanchez.
‘I am taking nothing away from Giroud but his strike does not make my top 20 Premier League goals.
‘There is always an element of luck with those sorts of goals.’

‘As good as it was, I wouldn’t put it in the same bracket Thierry Henry’s volley against Manchester United, Wayne Rooney’s overhead kick against Manchester City or Dele Alli’s flick and volley last year against Crystal Palace… and the list goes on!’
A poor cross should have arrived too late for Giroud to pull the trigger but as the ball came across his back, the striker pulled off a spectacular scorpion kick.

Arsenal beat Palace 2-0 in their first game of 2017 and Giroud’s goal came on just his second league start of the season.
