A man known for his brevity with words, isn't so stingy when it comes to moving gestures.
San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, who was a friend of the late Craig Sager, recently used one of those gestures on Sager's son.
Popovich attended Sager's memorial service on Dec. 20, in Marietta, Ga., the morning before the Spurs played in Houston. He wore a flashy tie, reminiscent of the gaudy glamor of the late Sager. He wore the tie again this weekend when the Spurs visited the Atlanta Hawks at Philips Arena.
After the game, Popovich gave the pink and blue multicolor garment to Craig Sager II.
"Didn't have time to see him at the funeral but met up after last night's game," Sager II tweeted. "He brought the tie he wore to the funeral w/ him to give me."
The Spurs lost 114-112 Sunday to the Hawks. Sager passed after a long battle with leukemia at the age of 65.
In 2014, the younger Sager interviewed Popovich while his father underwent leukemia treatment. At that game, Popovich showed fans a rare glimpse of his compassionate side when he said: You did a great job, but I'd rather have your father here."
"We miss you," Popovich said of Sager at the time. "You've been an important part of this for a long time, doing a great job. We want your fanny back on the court and I promise I'll be nice."
After that game, Popovich gave Sager II a hand written letter to give to his father.
The Spurs battle the Toronto Raptors at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the AT&T Center.
